Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Simply naming what is already going well might be just enough to help contain your current experience.

Providing a safe place to get started

Not everyone who needs trauma therapy is ready to start and that is OK!

  • SFBT can help you identify the resources you already have, strengthen them, and teach new strategies to enhance them.

  • SFBT teaches strategies that help with accessing the resilience you already have in order to better cope with current situations.

  • SFBT does not go to the deeper painful places and often teaches how to maintain control and contain your experience.  This actually is an important part of the EMDR experience.

  • SFBT often integrates well with other modalities.

Structured:

  • Initial Consultation: An SFBT specialist will conduct an initial assessment to collaborate with you.

  • Collaborative Planning: You and your therapist will together come to identify what needs to be addressed.

  • SFBT Sessions: These usually are planned out in advance after the first evaluation meeting with a specific timeline adhered to in most cases.

  • Containment, control, clarity.  In the end, it is intended that you will have a greater send of control, awareness of the importance of the skills you already have had all along, and new strategies to cope with your presenting....solutions!

Keep the following in mind:

  • SFBT is not a replacement for EMDR, but can help you prepare to carefully discern if and when you would like to try EMDR.

  • SFBT may be all you need for the present moment and it can be a safe way to have a positive therapy experience..

  • You can always come back after a break if you and your therapist decide to stop after goals are met.
